Shop owners have fed their communities for over 10 years and cherished moments along the way.
If you have been hungry for something new, Super Star Donuts may have something for you. With a wide selection of sweet and savory treats, you are likely to find something to satisfy your morning hunger.
Super Star Donuts has been in San Bernardino for 12 years and has built quite a reputation and community. The business is co-owned by Sophal “Paula” Valencia and her sister Sophia Korng, who run and manage it. They started the business to provide for their families.
According to Valencia, the croissant sandwich and the bagel are crowd favorites. Their most popular drink is the Coyote smoothie, named after the CSUSB staff and students who frequent the shop. Valencia recalls that a friend who used to work at CSUSB requested the smoothie.
“The Coyote brings a lot of people back,” she said.
Aside from the food, Valencia believes another reason people come back for more has much to do with the community. Valencia explains that much of this community building is through mutual support.
Valencia supports the San Bernardino community through her work with the Salvation Army and Amazon, giving donuts to those in need and fundraising for Air Force students who frequent Super Star Donuts.
“One thing that makes me happy [is] seeing people come together and enjoying my food and feel welcome; it means the most to me,” she said.
Apart from giving back to her community, Valencia’s work is inspired by a desire to set an example for her children. With roots in Cambodia, she hopes to give them opportunities to have a better life.
"I'm an immigrant from Cambodia. We hardly know any English,” she said.
Despite the challenges with language barriers, she continues to provide for her family, serve her community, and serve quality food.
“The purpose of the business is to leave a legacy for my children to let them know that no matter where you're from, you always can make a difference,” said Valencia.
