One on-campus organization's campaign has the tools students need to become civically engaged.
Midterms are coming up, and it's more than just university exams. Midterm elections are coming up on Nov. 3, and that means voter and registration information is crucial to exercising the right to vote and becoming actively engaged in the community. An on-campus organization is hard at work focusing on motivating students to become civically engaged community members.
The Voice Your Choice campaign kicked off Tuesday, Sept. 25, with Vote and Vibe, an event held by Associated Students, Incorporated on the Coyote Walk. The event hosted over 220 students and provided refreshments, food and music, and gave out prizes to game participants. The launch of this campaign focused on getting students to be more civically engaged and gave resources for voter registration.
“The topic of civic engagement is a little more serious, so we tried to find a way to make the education fun and interactive," Herbert Gonzalez, the associate director of ASI, said.
The ASI Voice Your Choice website provides resources and links where students can learn more about what's on the ballot and register to vote online before the Oct. 19 deadline.
The midterm general election is held every two years to vote on more than half of the sitting members of Congress, as well as court judges, propositions and measures. For those already registered, you can build your voter plan to ensure you know how and when you will cast your vote.
By participating in the Voice Your Choice campaign, students can also submit their voting plan to earn points for CSUSB in the Ballot Bowl.
The Ballot Bowl is a competition between 236 California schools aimed at encouraging students to register to vote, submit their voter plan, and be politically engaged. The winner of this competition will receive a trophy and recognition from the California Secretary of State. California State University San Bernardino registered 544 students in 2024 and is calling on those interested in registering to vote to help win this year’s Ballot Bowl and to increase local community involvement.
The Voice Your Choice campaign flyers and other outreach materials are handy tools to be an informed voter. These materials can be found at the ASI office on the third floor of the Santos Manuel Student Union North building or online by using the link on ASI’s campus page.
